Art commission in Midhurst

Midhurst Town Council in consultation with the South Downs National Park Authority and Chichester District Council wish to commission an innovative piece of public art to complement a recently completed housing development within Midhurst town centre.

We are looking for an appropriate intervention that gives a sense of interest and intrigue whilst respecting the setting of historic buildings and structures and the amenities of the residents who overlook the townscape. Long-term maintenance and health and safety are key considerations of the project and the appointed artist would have to take these issues into account in their creative practice.

We do not wish to be prescriptive and would like artists to develop ideas based on their own creativity, practice and use of materials; we would like applicants to consider the theme of "Change". It could comprise a single piece of artwork or alternatively a number of smaller, sympathetic interventions or structures or even be digitally based.

Midhurst Town Council invites artists to register their interest in working with the Council and their partners to deliver the artwork.

Artists are invited to submit an initial expression of interest by sending in a rudimentary proposal, which could be a PowerPoint Presentation, images and a written description or just writing with a list of recent projects together with a CV and artist's statement.

The deadline for all submissions is 28th April 2017.

This will form the basis for a selection panel to draw up a shortlist of 3 artists who will receive an Honorarium of £500.00 to develop and submit full concept drawings and/or a model of the proposed intervention. The artists will then present their ideas to a meeting of the selection panel. The selected artist will then be commissioned to work with the Town Council and residents to develop and implement the chosen proposal.

The total budget for the intervention is in the region of £20k. Please read the full brief for further information.
